| Shilong, a town with over
800-year history, is now regarded as a central town
in Guangdong province. It is on the south of Guangzhou
(about 69 kilometers), on the north of Shenzhen (about
78 kilometers), and adjacent to Hongkong. Being a key
port of Dongjiang water transport both in history and
at present, it earns a reputation as one of ¡°Four Famous
Towns¡± in Guangdong; the other three are Guangzhou,
Foshan and Chen Town in Shunde. Up to now, quite a number
of historical sites and old street scenes have been
kept in good state of preservation.
Throughout history, Shilong had
been set up as¡°shi¡±(administrative unit in ancient China,
directly under the jurisdiction of a county or province)
for many times. It gradually turned into an economic,
cultural, and trade center among nearby towns (regions).
With the passage of time, Shilong is now taking on a
new look and coming to its golden time. Great changes
have taken place in this town since reforming and open-door
policy had been carried out. Presently, it occupies
a total area of 12.5 square kilometers, with a population
of about 130,000 (registered permanent residents plus
constant residents). It also has more than 20,000 oversea
people and compatriots, living abroad, in Hong Kong
and Macao.
Making good use of favorable
climatic, geographical and human conditions, Shilong
implements the development strategy of ¡°Booming the
Town with Science and Technology¡±. Under such strategy,
it promotes the construction of State Spark Technology-Intensive
Zone and National Experimental Informatization Town,
and devotes major efforts to developing industrial production
and export-oriented economy. Since its industry, business,
trade, culture, investment, along with the whole appearance
of the town have shown a tendency of rapid development,
it becomes an important base of information manufacturing
industry in Dongguan City, and has been awarded the
following honors by its outstanding achievement in economic
development, cultural refinement, and city construction:
