　　Shilong Town keeps a rapid and healthy development of national economy after reform and opening. The economic strength has been constantly improved. In 1991,Shilong's GDP was only 25.1 millions .In 2002,Shilong's GDP reached 280 millions.

    In December 1999, Shilong was approved by The State Council Informatization Office to be the first experimental informatization town in China. In 2000, approved by National Science Committee, it became a Constructing Unit for State Spark Technology-Intensive Zone. For many years, Shilong people have been working hard to carry out the development strategy of “Booming the Town with Science and Education”. Through attracting investments from overseas and developing pillar industries, Shilong has successfully drawn a number of large-scale companies to settle here, for instance, Beijing Peking University Founder Group Corp., The Kyocera Institute of Japan, Minolta Co., Ltd of Japan, and Preview Group in Taiwan; Presently, it has become an important manufacturing base of electronic & information industry, with an annual output of 2,400,000 cameras, over 1,000,000 computers, 1,500,000 computer monitors, 750,000 digital duplicator, and 1,800,000 digital laser printers.

    22 enterprises in the town have been selected as High-Tech Enterprise in Guangdong Province. The gross output value of electronic & information manufacturing industry accounts for over 80% of total output value of the town’s industry. The progress of technology devotes 56% to the development of economics.

    Now Shilong has more than 1000 industrial enterprises, in which over 200 are quite broad in scale. Shilong South China Pharmaceutical Group Company, whose fixed assets overpasses 150 million RMB, comes from the merging of the former Guangdong South China Pharmaceutical Factory with Guangdong Zhongsheng Pharmaceutical Group Co. Ltd. in compliance with modern enterprise system. It can simultaneously put out 12 forms of prepared drugs and produce over 300 kinds of Chinese and Western medicine. Its State Torch Project Items—— compound thrombus capsule and heartache remittance sprayer——have been respectively awarded “Silver Prize of Jakarta International Fair” and “National Prize of Major Scientific Achievement in Traditional Medicine”. Founder Computer Company, a manufacturing base set in Shilong by Peking University Founder Group Corp. for producing computers, now expands its business to include a series of electronic consumer products, such as personal computers, notebook computers, digital cameras, MP3, etc. Longkey Electronic Company enjoys a high reputation in world market with its PTC electronic components. Besides, food and drink industries grow up rapidly and begin to take shape, among which Jinwei Drink and Kangmeichen Food are of great renown in China.

    Shilong possesses more than 100 enterprises with overseas investment. Over 30 Japanese enterprises have settled down here. The town has become one of the most intensive regions of Japanese investments. One of World Top 500 Enterprise, Japanese Kyocera Corporation, starting its investment in Shilong in 1987, is the earliest Japanese enterprise that establishes friendly economic cooperative relationship with the town. At present, Dongguan Shilong Kyocera Optics Co., Ltd. and Kyocera Amita Office Equipments (Dongguan) Co., Ltd, co-invested by Kyocera Corporation and Shilong, produce international famous KYOCERA and YASHICA Cameras, Flash Lamps, Optical Instruments, MITA Digital Duplicators and Laser Printers. The annual output value of the two companies has exceeded 1 billion HK dollars. Japanese Minolta Corporation set a factory in Shilong in 1994. It manufactures advanced digital duplicators and laser printers, with annual output of 500,000. Other famous Japanese enterprises include Lifugao Company, SANKYO SEIKI MFG Co. Ltd., ADVANEX Company, TKR Company, TOPCON Corporation, The First Chemosynthesis Company and Xiaoquan Lantern Decorating Company, etc.

    A large business network, consisting of a variety of retail trades, such as shopping centers, warehouse-type supermarkets, comprehensive supermarkets, chain supermarkets and chain stores, has come into being in Shilong. Now there are about 4500 emporiums and stores, mainly distributed on Zhongshan Road, Lühua Road, Xionglong Road, West Lake District, which make up of the center of the business zone.

    Presently, a trade market system, represented by hardware wholesale market, building materials wholesale market, apparel wholesale market, extends to Dongguan and Boluo in Huizhou. There are altogether 13 commodity exchange markets.
